2021 certainly was a year to remember. At the Hamburg Research Academy, the unpredictable situation made us quite inventive and we always tried to adapt our course programme and events as best as possible.

Our themed year on social background and equal opportunities in academia came to a grand conclusion with a digital PhD day and a symposium. Our podcast “Spread the Word”, which was created as part of our science communication project, can be enjoyed wherever you are. It provides fantastic insights into the exciting work of researchers based in Hamburg. The digital world also allowed us to win outstanding international guests for three events: the Monday Lectures on Good Supervision and two salon evenings on international mobility and the future of the German academic system (listen again here). In September we hosted a large number of Germany's graduate institutions and policy makers when we had the honour of organizing the UniWiND annual conference (digitally) at the HRA and successfully demonstrating what Hamburg has to offer for its early career researchers. Last but not least, we are pleased that our doctoral and postdoc councils are active despite the pandemic. Click through the links, if you want to learn more.

But enough of 2021, the curtain will soon be raised for the New Year! May new spaces - personal, professional, social - emerge. We remain optimistic and you can be sure that we will organize great events again in 2022. Whether digital or face-to-face, it remains exciting. Here is a small outlook: A new themed year on “networking”; another “ask me anything” with female professors in February provides insights on the path to professorship; we will host a unique workshop series with international experts from March on good supervision; there will be highlights in science communication in April; a PhD day in May; and and and….
