Part 5: Power & Academic System
In this final HRA Salon on the topic “Power & Academia”, we are taking a critical but also future-oriented look at the German academic system as a whole and its balance of power. What are the special characteristics and advantages of the system in an international comparison? On the other hand, which structures need reform and what should a new federal government address? What is to be expected, for example, from the upcoming evaluation of the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” or the still unpredictable impact of the pandemic?

The HRA Salon marks the beginning of the GUAT conference, which will be hosted on 29 and 30 September by the Universität Hamburg and the Hamburg Research Academy.

"Funding acquisition takes up unacceptable amounts of time making many scientists leave academic research to pursue their career elsewhere. We need a massive change in our academic research system, making public and politicians understand that science is the only resource we have. It requires long-term funding uncoupled from legislatures and the dogmas of individual political parties to allow the researchers to focus on their science instead on how to acquire funding and develop the solution for current and future crises." "The German academic career system contains elements of both the traditional professorial hierarchy and of the American departmental system that recognizes an independent Junior Faculty. These systems are not compatible with each other. Thus, there is a muddle of diverse, time-limited positions between the doctorate and the professorship, mostly without a clear perspective such as tenure-track. Reforms are overdue, but the resistance is high." Prof. Dr. Reinhard Jahn
"Academic research has long been a global business. Private sector research is increasingly so too. This highlights the importance of developing international experience and understanding in early career researchers. But many are limited in their opportunities, for personal reasons as well as for lack of opportunities and connections or in some cases resistance by the supervisor or Principal Investigator. How can this be more consistent?" Prof. David Bogle
