If you want to be heard in academia, you need more than strong arguments. The 2025 Promovierendentag of the Hamburg Research Academy focused entirely on the theme of voice – both literally and figuratively. On 22 May, more than 80 doctoral researchers from HRA member institutions gathered at betahaus in Hamburg’s Sternschanze district to explore visibility, impact, and communication skills in academic life.
Following a joint welcome by the HRA and the Doctoral Council, participants participated in diverse workshops. Topics included voice training, body language, stage presence, science communication, and coping with social anxiety during the PhD journey.
Beyond the workshops, the event provided space for exchange, networking, and reflection. In a relaxed atmosphere, doctoral researchers connected across disciplines and institutions, asked questions, and gained new perspectives. "My personal challenge for you today is this: go home with at least three new contacts", encouraged Prof. Dr. Miriam Beblo (Scientific Director of the HRA). Interactive formats such as the Small Talk Challenge supported this goal.
Why is "Ich geh Bahnhof" also known as "Kurzdeutsch"? And what do fat cats have to do with artificial intelligence? With plenty of humor, clarity, and stage presence, Dr. Diana Marossek and Luca Neuperti presented their research at the concluding Science Slam.
We’re already looking forward to next year!
