  Unmittelbar nach dem Aufkommen der Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 hat der Wissenschaftsrat begonnen, sich mit Herausforderungen von COVID-19 für das Wissenschaftssystem zu befassen. Im Januar 2021 hat das wissenschaftspolitische Beratungsgremium von Bund und Ländern ein Positionspapier vorgelegt.

The German federal government has resolved to adjust the maximum time limit for academic and artistic staff pursuant to Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG) with the aim of addressing COVID-19-related disadvantages for researchers on fixed contracts. The changes apply retrospectively from 1 March 2020.

Universität Hamburg has announced a new assistance fund for teaching staff to cover the wages of student assistants who can help with digital teaching duties. Applications are open to academics employed at Universität Hamburg who have an obligatory teaching load in Summer Semester 2020 and who have to look after children under 12, children with disabilities, or dependent relatives at home due to the unavailability of childcare and nursing facilities and therefore struggle to prepare and carry out their teaching duties.

In order to counteract the effect of the "Corona Publication Gap", Hamburg has approved funds for projects which support and promote academics with family and care responsibilities. In the next two years, measures will be offered both in universities and institutions in Hamburg as well as across universities.

The Hochschulforum Digitalisierung (HFD) is a think tank that orchestrates the discourse on higher education in the digital age. The HFD was founded in 2014. It is a joint initiative of CHE Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung, Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) and the Stifterverband. It is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

On a special webpage (unfortunately only available in German at the moment) the HFD brings together a lot of interesting information about universities and digitization in times of corona. You will find didactic guides and useful tools, blog posts and lots of references to helpful information. There are also references to a wide variety of events and opportunities to participate.
