Series: Approaches to Good Supervision
4. April/ 2. Mai/ 6. Juni/ 4. Juli 2023, 15:00-19:00 Uhr, online
Dozent: Dr. Jan Schmidt
Starting as a postdoc, junior group leader or junior professor, it is usually expected to supervise doctoral candidates. Supervision however is one of the tasks that are so “normal” in academia that we quite often neglect to further explain and prepare: “Everybody knows what supervision is so we don’t need to talk about it.” – As a result of this mindset, researchers who start supervising quite often feel abandoned.
The series of short workshops “Approaches to Good Supervision” addresses different aspects of supervision and provides insights into different aspects and requirements to gain skills (and confidence) to supervise. The approach developed specifically for this topic illuminates the supervision of doctoral researchers from the sociological role theory and describes “supervision” with the three terms: Lead, Train and Facilitate.
Please note: As the four sessions build on each other, we recommend attending all of them and to make use of the opportunity of sharing your experience in the course of the series. However, participants can also choose to attend selected sessions. You have to register separately for each session.
Mental Health for Postdocs and Supervisors: Taking Care of Yourself and Others
24. April/ 8. Mai/ 22. Mai 2023, 14:00-16:00 Uhr, online
Dozentin: Dr. Ulrike Schneeberg
In this three-part workshop, you will look at mental health through three different lenses: (1) the systemic lens, (2) the individual/identity lens, and (3) the lens of communication in relation with your (PhD) students. The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness about stress-related phenomena in academia and to explore the effects of listening for feelings and needs on our wellbeing. The three sessions build up on each other.
Doctoral Supervision: Methods & Tools
5./6. Juni 2023, 9:00-15:30 Uhr, in Präsenz; 28. August 2023, 9:00-12:30 Uhr, online
Dozentinnen: Dr. Gitte Wichmann-Hansen, Dr. Mirjam Godskesen
The purpose of this intensive workshop is to expand supervisors’ repertoire of concrete hands-on tool and strategies to make supervision a professional, effective, and enjoyable process. The purpose is also to create a safe space for supervisors to reflect on their role and to exchange experiences with other supervisors.
The course includes two consecutive workshop days in June (physical event) and a ½ day follow-up workshop in August (online on Zoom). In the intervening time, participants engage in peer-interactions either in the form of 1) peer-observation of actual supervision or 2) case-based meetings without observations. Participants can freely choose which of the two formats they prefer.
